UberState
The super-rich have declared independence and migrated to their own virtual world
Can you imagine…
… a completely new, conceptual, virtual nation-state, created solely for the richest, brightest, most resourceful people in the world?
Why did they create it? How could it work? Who would run it? Who would police it? Who gets to join?…
Here’s the premise:
The uber- rich of the world are becoming untouchable. They don’t believe in paying taxes, or bowing to anyone - not any single country, or even royalty, presidents, religious leaders…
They go where they want, whenever they wish. They hop around the globe in their private jets and superyachts. They have their own islands. Or maybe they use the trappings of wealth and luxury courtesy of their friends and associates - other billionaires in the main.
Their wealth just creates even more wealth: businesses, resources, properties, intellectual rights, networks, digital currency…revolving in their own Croesus-ian universe so perfectly balanced and hermetically protected from volatile economies, currencies and controls that the rest of us are subject to.
You’re probably already imagining who some of the citizens of this Uber-economy might be…or have been…if they’re now dead. The Bezos’s, Musks, Gates’s, Putins…and the Epsteins of the world. Not necessarily the Kings and Queens of the world, because most are probably still wedded to their countries. Not the Trumps of the world either: losers; brainless chancers…
Then again, maybe the whole thing is conditional on none of them having to talk to each other. They probably all hate each other. This is Lord of the Flies without the harmony. These people want all the same things; they just don’t care much for sharing it.
But maybe they’re not just the evil and repugnant members of zillionaire society. Or maybe you believe all of them are, by definition, evil and repugnant. Let’s park that for now.
The whole point of the UberState (do we have a name yet?) is that it sits above, outside of any conventional country, or continent, or legal framework. Those historic entities and systems are no longer applicable to these people.
You might be thinking this all sounds a little like those Freemasons, or Opus Dei and those other ancient ‘sects’ that apparently transcended the centuries and traditional boundaries of the global order. But this version is much more powerful.
What’s the point, you might ask? Why would I - as a fellow zillionaire - even want to be in that club?
Maybe because, if you’re up there, in the UberState, you’ve lost faith in the ability of any government, group of leaders, political systems, form of governance, to protect you, your wealth, your family?…
Maybe you think you don’t/can’t allow anyone access to what you feel you deserve, or can afford?… Justice? Freedom? Safety? Everlasting life? The moon?
Exploring the mindset of an UberState candidate:
“Let’s face it, the ‘best’ Democracies, Kingdoms, Republics, Oligarchies, Political and Economic systems… are all failing, or about to implode. Climate or resource shortages are killing them. Greed and incompetence others. With no real sign of any improvement anywhere. Lurching from one failed theory to another. No point in pledging your allegiance or obedience to any of them…
“I create my own wealth and I decide who gets paid what and how. I’m not greedy; thousands - maybe millions of people - are benefitting from my existence. Taxation systems are not designed for people like me. I know how best to reinvest my money and resources.
“Neither can society protect me and my family. Way too risky for me to leave it to them. I’ll decide who to trust and who not to”
“And I’ll provide solutions to many of the world’s problems in the process. Most countries are just playing at it, going through the motions. Or they don’t have the power and access to resources that myself and my cohorts do….
“Africa: what a mess! India: unmanageable. The USA: a busted flush, heading for the abyss. Europe: hopeless. China: we need to think about China..
“So yes there’s a lot of work to be done, but there’s no point in waiting for any one of these states to get it right. Just won’t happen.
“We can choose to do it our way, or maybe just get out of the way: leave them to it. Live without them. But don’t expect them to ever do the right thing by us. Won’t happen….”
Ok, there’s the scenario. When will this happen? Where will it be based?… In a network of data-centres?
Or does it already exist?…
