Desert Island Disc 5: Coming Home, Mark Knopfler and friends…
…all from a Geordie shore….
I’m cheating again at this point. Impossible to choose one song from a string of brilliant Dire Straits albums that hit my sweet spot of 1970s/80’s music, coming up to the present day with another Geordie genius joining them all.
Mark Knopfler, Sting, Bryan Ferry, Eric Burdon, Alan Hull, and the young pretender Sam Fender, and me. We all have something in common. Apart from poetic genius, guitar skills, and rugged good looks of course.
We’re all from Newcastle Upon Tyne.
So here I’m inviting them all to finally play on a compilation disc just for me. And hey! Mark Knopfler step forward! He’s sort of just done it anyway, recently releasing a version of Coming Home with a most amazing collection of guest guitarists from the ages. That’ll do for me.
Apologies come from Alan Hull - arguably the most talented songwriter amongst them. He’s taken up an altogether more exalted position on high, too early by far. And Eric Burdon is out of sorts.
Special mentions also go to:
Lindisfarne: Lady Eleanor
Police: Roxanne
Roxy Music: Love is the Drug
Sam Fender: Getting Started
Perfect bunch of local heroes walking down a beach together….
